Puppy's First Groom: When, Why, and What to Expect

By Admin User ·

Bringing your puppy in for their first groom is a big milestone — and we take it very seriously. A positive first experience can set your puppy up for a lifetime of stress-free grooming. A bad one can make every future visit a battle.

That's why we approach puppy grooms completely differently to adult appointments. Here's everything you need to know.

When Should My Puppy Have Their First Groom?

We recommend bringing your puppy in at 12 to 16 weeks old, once they've had their second vaccination and have been given the all-clear by your vet to mix with other dogs.

Don't wait until the coat is long or tangled before booking. The first groom isn't really about the haircut — it's about the experience. We want your puppy to associate the salon with positive things before they actually need a full groom.

What Happens During a Puppy Groom?

A puppy's first groom is deliberately short and gentle. Here's what we typically cover:

  • A warm welcome — Lots of treats, gentle handling, and getting used to the salon environment
  • Introduction to the table — Standing calmly on the grooming table with plenty of reassurance
  • Gentle brush — Getting used to the feel of a brush on their coat
  • Bath — A warm, gentle bath with puppy-appropriate shampoo
  • Blow dry introduction — Low speed, low heat, with lots of breaks if needed
  • Light trim — Just a tidy around the face, paws, and sanitary area
  • Nail clip — Getting used to having their paws handled

The whole appointment usually takes about 30 minutes. We keep it short so your puppy leaves on a high note.

What If My Puppy Gets Stressed?

Some puppies take to grooming like a duck to water. Others find it overwhelming. Both responses are completely normal.

If your puppy is showing signs of stress, we'll slow down, take breaks, and adjust our approach. It's far better to do a shorter, calmer session than to push through and create a negative association.

We've groomed hundreds of puppies and we're experienced at reading their body language and adapting accordingly. Your puppy is in safe, patient hands.

How to Prepare Your Puppy at Home

You can help make the first groom a success by getting your puppy used to being handled before their appointment:

  • Touch their paws regularly — many dogs are foot-shy if this isn't introduced early
  • Brush them gently — even if their coat doesn't need it yet, the sensation of a brush is important
  • Handle their ears and face — these are sensitive areas that get a lot of attention during grooming
  • Get them used to noise — a hair dryer on low in the same room (not pointed at them) can help desensitise them to the sound
  • Practice the journey — a short car ride to somewhere fun builds positive associations with travel

When Should I Book the Next Appointment?

After the first groom, we recommend rebooking within 4 to 6 weeks. Regular visits in the early months build confidence and keep the coat in great condition as it transitions from puppy fluff to adult coat.

As your puppy grows, we'll gradually introduce more elements — a fuller clip, more detailed styling, longer sessions — at a pace that suits them.

How Much Does a Puppy Groom Cost?

Our puppy groom is a flat rate, regardless of breed or size. It's priced to encourage early grooming without the cost being a barrier. Check our services page for current pricing.

Investing in early grooming experiences now saves you — and your dog — a lot of stress in the future. A confident, relaxed dog is easier to groom, and the results always look better.
