How to Keep Your Cockapoo's Coat Tangle-Free Between Grooms

By Admin User ·

Cockapoos are one of the most popular breeds we see at the salon, and it's easy to see why. That soft, curly coat is adorable — but it can also be a magnet for tangles and matting if it's not looked after between grooms.

The good news is that keeping your Cockapoo's coat in great condition doesn't have to be complicated. With the right tools and a simple routine, you can avoid those dreaded mats and keep your dog comfortable and happy.

Why Cockapoo Coats Mat So Easily

Cockapoos inherit their coat from both Poodle and Cocker Spaniel parents, which means they often have a mix of curly and wavy hair. This combination is beautiful but prone to tangling — especially around the ears, armpits, behind the legs, and anywhere a harness sits.

Unlike some breeds that shed regularly, Cockapoos tend to hold onto their loose hair, which wraps around the live coat and forms tangles. Left unchecked, these tangles become mats, which tighten against the skin and can cause real discomfort.

The Right Brush Makes All the Difference

You'll want two tools: a slicker brush and a metal comb. The slicker brush does the heavy lifting, working through the top layers of the coat. The metal comb is your finishing check — if it glides through smoothly, you're done. If it catches, there's a tangle hiding underneath.

Avoid using a bristle brush on a Cockapoo — it won't reach deep enough to catch tangles before they become mats.

How Often Should You Brush?

Ideally, every two to three days. It sounds like a lot, but once you're in the habit, a full brush-through takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Think of it as quality time with your dog rather than a chore.

If you can only manage once a week, focus on the trouble spots: behind the ears, under the chin, armpits, belly, and the backs of the legs. These are the areas where mats form first.

The Line-Brushing Technique

The most effective method is called line brushing. Part the coat in sections, starting from the bottom, and brush each layer from root to tip. This ensures you're getting right down to the skin, not just smoothing the surface while tangles hide underneath.

It's gentle, thorough, and much kinder to your dog than trying to yank through a mat that's been building for weeks.

After Walks — Quick Checks

After every walk, run your hands over your Cockapoo's coat, particularly if they've been running through long grass or undergrowth. Twigs, seeds, and grass can work their way into the coat and start tangles within hours. A quick check and a few strokes with the slicker brush takes two minutes and saves a lot of trouble later.

When to Book a Professional Groom

We recommend a professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks for Cockapoos. This keeps the coat at a manageable length and allows us to check for any skin issues that might be hidden under all that fluff.

If you're finding it hard to keep on top of the brushing, we can discuss a shorter maintenance clip that's easier to manage at home while still looking smart and stylish.
